Julia Meredith Hess, PhD

Research Assistant Professor, Anthropology Department and Prevention Research Center

Julia Meredith Hess is a sociocultural anthropologist whose primary research interests are health and well-being of marginalized populations. She has over 20 years’ experience conducting qualitative research with immigrants, refugees, Native Americans, and the wide diversity of people in New Mexico. Major themes in her work include health and well-being, families, violence, and state policy. Since 2009, she has worked at the University of New Mexico’s Prevention Research Center as a co-investigator with expertise in qualitative research on a number of mixed methods projects including Native American family interventions that include traditional elements to address violence exposure, sexual assault prevention, promoting access to places for physical activity, and refugee mental health and well-being.
