Associate Research Scientist III, Prevention Research Center

Dr. Martinez’s work concentrates on risk behavior prevention with Hispanic, American Indian, and Latin American families. His health disparities research and training has focused on understanding the intersection and impact of socio-cultural, familial, school, peer, and developmental processes on youth risky behavior; cultural adaptation of substance use and risky sex prevention/interventions utilizing a CBPR approach (Families Preparing the Next Generation; Keepin’ it REAL; Living in Two Worlds; Familias Unidas); and advanced statistical modeling of adolescent risk etiology. His current role at the Prevention Research Center is scientific program manager for the Laguna-Acoma High School Teen Outreach Program (TOP). TOP is an evidence based, positive youth development curriculum targeting teen pregnancy and academic achievement. He is also working with PRC staff and community leaders on several grants that target adolescent risk behavior using strengths based approaches. Before coming to UNM, Dr. Martinez was an assistant professor in the College of Public Health and Social Work at Florida International University and was also a faculty affiliate with the Center for Research on U.S. Latino HIV/AIDS and Drug Abuse.
