Program Overview

As with CHILE, CHILE Plus is based on the socioecological model. This framework describes five levels of influence: individual, interpersonal, organizational, community, and public policy. When applying this model to a school setting, it suggests the integration of classroom activities, changes in the school environment as a whole, and intervention at home and in the community at large.  All of these settings have an effect on the eating habits and physical activity of a child, so they must all be included in the approach to child wellness. CHILE Plus includes six components that fit into this framework: the classroom curriculum, staff professional development, food service, family engagement, grocery store collaboration, and partnership with local health care providers and Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program providers.
